E.R. Fightmaster has joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Kai Bartley in a recurring role.
The casting marks the first non-binary actor to play a doctor on the long-running hit series, according to Variety.
Fightmaster’s character Dr. Bartley was introduced to viewers on episode three of the current season (season 18).

The actor’s character met Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and neurosurgeon Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) in the episode, when Meredith was being wooed by a research group that included Dr. Bartley from a Minnesota hospital.
They wanted Meredith to join their research project to help cure Parkinson’s Disease.
In addition to Fightmaster being non-binary, Dr. Bartley is as well.
While Fightmaster is the first non-binary actor to play a doctor on the show, in seasons 14-16 trans actor Alex Blu Davis played a surgical resident named Casey Parker, per the outlet.

The actor will appear a number of episodes once Grey’s comes back with new episodes, including the midseason finale in December.
Variety reported that the ABC character description for Dr. Bartley read: ‘They are dedicated to their craft and extremely talented at what they do. Confident as hell and able to make even the most detailed and mundane science seem exciting and cool, Kai and Amelia bond over their shared love of medicine and the brain.
Fightmaster most recently had a role in Shrill on Hulu, featured on season two and three.
In addition, other credits include Work in Progress as well as part of the band Twin.
