Maurice matriculated from De La Salle High School in Concord, where he played football and also ran for the school’s track team. During his three year stay, he became a part of the longest winning streak in high school football history at 151 games. He received recognition as a running back, and was ranked the number one prospect for all-purpose back by rivals.com. After high school, Jones-Drew accepted a scholarship from the University of California, Los Angeles(UCLA) and played for the school’s team, the Bruins. During his time with the Bruins, Maurice broke a few NCAA and UCLA records for football, leading the team in rushing yards for his entire three year stay, all-purpose yardage, and punt-return average yardage, and was awarded several National Player of the Week Awards.

He joined the 2006 NFL Draft at the age of 21 and was selected as a second round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars; many teams took a pass on him despite his talents, stating that his height would give him a hard time in the NFL. While he had a slow start in 2006, he suddenly exploded with big plays, setting records for rushing yards and all-purpose yards. He finished the year tied at second for the Offensive Rookie of the Year balloting. With high expectations coming in for the following year, Jones-Drew started out with an average season but then continued to improve his game. He would score numerous touchdowns throughout the season, though during the post-season he was used mainly as a receiver and return man. His 2008 season wasn’t as explosive as the previous one as the team started to use his passing game more. He still performed well but his record-breaking season would come in 2009. His performances would earn him the recognition of being the most versatile offensive player in the NFL, such that he was selected as a backup for the Pro Bowl.

He played the entire 2010 season with a torn minescus on his left knee but tried to keep it a secret for the season so that it wouldn’t be targeted. In 2011, Maurice led the NFL in rushing yards despite the struggles of the Jaguars that year. He was again named as a backup to the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl. By the 2012 season he started to avoid team activities and training, stating that he was being payed less compared to other running backs in the team, his season ended early when he was placed in the injury reserve.

After the 2013 season, he became a free agent and played one year for the Oakland Raiders with very low statistics. Eventually he re-signed a one day contract with the Jaguars to retire.

For his personal life, it is known that Maurice took the surname Jones-Drew as a tribute to his supportive grandfather who died during one of his college football games because of a heart attack. Maurice is married to Ashley(m. 2012) and they have two sons and a daughter.
