Social media made him one of the biggest stars of the Democratic National Convention — a man in a “Peter Pan” hat, weeping during Sen. Bernie Sanders’ speech on Monday night.
Sean Kehren, 22, a Sanders delegate from Minnesota, may not have been the only die-hard “Bernie Bro” moved to tears, but he quickly became the subject of memes, tweets and other apparatus to mock the emotional showing of supporters at the convention. Blame his choice of hat — a nod to Wall Street’s “Robin Hood tax.”
“Sad Robin Hood just needs a minute,” a Twitter user wrote Monday.
Despite his misty-eyed response, Kehren told Yahoo News that he is not a dedicated Sanders fan.
“I was getting emotional over the fact that he was doing his best to unify the party and I think that’s such a noble cause,” Kehren said. “Bernie has led a revolution, he’s led a movement, and now that movement has to get behind the party.”
He plans to vote for Clinton in the fall, and cried earlier in the night when others heckled Sanders for his calls to go to the polls for the Democratic nominee.
“She’s done her best to make deals with Bernie and to embrace his side, and I have to giver her credit for that,” he told Yahoo News.
Kehren, for his part, has come to terms with his newfound Internet fame.
“I’m willing to admit that it’s funny to other people who don’t feel as passionate about it as I do,” he said. “And I don’t expect anyone to know who I am through just a picture of me crying.”
